The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the highest demand for air travel in the past five years. Global air travel demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, rose 6.5% for the year compared to 2014. This is the strongest result since the post-GFC rebound in 2010 and well above the 10-year average annual growth rate of 5.5%. Annual air capacity rose by 5.6% and passenger load factor climbed 0.6 percentage points to a record annual high of 80.3%. While all regions experienced growth in 2015, Asia Pacific airlines accounted for one-third of global annual increase in traffic in 2015, with a demand increase of 8.2% compared to 2014. Global airfares fell around 5% in 2015 compared with the previous year with consumers worldwide lapping up the lower fares. The latest data from IATA revealed 2015 as the strongest year for aviation since the post-Global Financial Crisis rebound in 2010 with growth in demand of 6.5% well above the 10-year average of 5.5%. Annual capacity rose 5.6% last year with load factors climbing 0.6 percentage points to a record annual high of 80.3%. All regions experienced positive traffic growth for the year with carriers in the Asia Pacific region accounting for one-third of the total annual increase in traffic. Asia Pacific carriers recorded an international demand increase of 8.2% compared to 2014 - the largest increase among the three largest regions. Find out more.

A study by the Airline Passenger Experience Association has indicated the lengths carriers may have to go to in order to satisfy tech-hungry customers. The organisation asked almost 3,500 regular air passengers from around the world for their opinions on a range of topics, including their overall passenger experience, technology and in-flight entertainment and ticket purchasing. Among the results:


  • Only around one-third of air passengers were very satisfied with their last flight.
  • Comfort and ambience are considered the most important requirements for an enjoyable journey.
  • Over half (55%) of passengers have downloaded an airline's mobile application.
  • Around 25% of passengers had the opportunity to use a free IFE system of some kind.
  • Most common use of a smartphone during a flight is music (48%), followed by games (42%), email/social media (36%), reading (24%) and watching downloaded movies/TV (16%).
