Overnight spending by domestic and international visitors in Australia increased by 9.3% over the last year to reach $97 billion putting the industry on track to achieve its Tourism 2020 goals. Figures from the National Visitor Survey released by Tourism Research Australia show all states and territories recorded growth in domestic overnight spend over the year to June 2016 with largest growth recorded by NT (28.1%), followed by WA (+14.9%). “Stellar growth in international tourist arrivals has been complemented by strong growth in domestic travel,” said Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP. A joint initiative between industry and government, Tourism 2020 was conceived in 2009 and included a stretch target of exceeding $115 billion in overnight visitor spending by the year 2020.

Domestic overnight tourism has reached an all-time high in 2014 with overnight trips up 7% to 81 million, visitor nights up 9% to 309 million nights and overnight spend up 6% to $54 billion according to the latest National Visitor Survey domestic tourism results. The December 2014 quarter NVS domestic tourism results, released by Tourism Research Australia, also showed that the Visiting Friends and Relatives and business sectors have recorded the strongest growth in 2014 with visitor expenditure up 5% and 16% respectively. Australians are starting to explore their own backyard again, spending a massive 15.7 visitor nights' caravan and camping in NSW in the past 12 months, according to the Caravan & Camping Industry Association. The figure is an increase of 16 per cent on the previous year, with the growing trend reflecting a resurgence in domestic holidays and a desire for connectedness and time out to relax with family and friends.
