The New York Times has released its annual innovative list of the 52 top places to go in 2016, with Australian city Sydney making the list. This year Sydney has earned its place for being a city 'outdoor lovers can embrace', home to beaches and national parks. Additionally, Sydney's two new developments have caught the eye of The New York Times this year. The shoreside promenade of Barangaroo Reserve, and will also temporarily house Copenhagen restaurant Noma for ten weeks from this month. The Goods Line - a repurposed train line that's been turned into an elevated walkway in a similar vein to New York's High Line, Sydney's renovated Old Clare Hotel and the reintroduction of American Airlines flights to Los Angeles in December also rated a mention. However, it was Mexico City that was named as the number one destination for 2016. See the full list of 52 cities here.

The New York Times has rolled out its annual list of Places to Go, allowing 52 destination marketing organisations to declare an early win on their 2015 publicity efforts. In a travel world packed with annual where to go lists, Places to Go has become the top destinations list in the United States, due to both the New York Times' position in the media landscape and the resources the brand can muster to produce the enormous package and promote the list. Americans today are taking less annual leave than at any point in nearly 40 years, according to a report for the U.S. Travel Association by Oxford Economics. So where and how will they be spending their leisure time in 2015? When Americans travel internationally, they typically stay closer to home. According to Euromonitor, the most popular international destination by a landslide will be Mexico, which topped the list last year with over 21 million trips. Mexico is alluring for its sun, cuisine, destination yoga retreats and cultural activities. Capturing second place is Canada, with Americans making approximately 12 million annual trips there due to its beauty, friendly people and safe environment.
