Nielsen's Consumer Confidence Report: Q1 2015

According to Nielsen's Q1 2015 consumer confidence report, the world's leading economies have shown improved consumer confidence. Meanwhile, consumer confidence in China, Russia and Brazil has declined. Among the report's highlights include:


  • Asia-Pacific showed a robust start to the year with confidence scores in 9/14 countries at or above the baseline reading of 100.
  • Many of Europe's key markets posted the highest consumer confidence scores in several years.
  • North American recessionary sentiment continued to recede, but spending intentions remained restrained.
  • Confidence in Latin America declined to the lowest level since 2011.
  • Over a six-year-period, concerns about the economy and job security showed an inverse relationship with concerns about health and work/life balance.

In Nielsen's latest online survey, conducted between November 10-28, 2014, consumer confidence was found to have increased in 17 of 60 markets (28%), compared with 39 markets (65%) in the third quarter. India’s score of 129, the highest index among 60 markets, increased three points from the third quarter. Italy reported the lowest score of 45, a quarterly decline of two points. Ireland (90) showed the biggest improvement, as confidence there rose six percentage points. Malaysia (89) logged the biggest decline, as confidence there fell 10 points from the previous quarter. While confidence fell slightly in every region in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter, the index is still above a pre-recession level of 94 from third-quarter 2007. Rise in global consumer confidence | The Insight Files | Scoop.it

Nielsen has released the findings of its latest report, detailing consumer confidence and specifically consumer concerns and spending intentions around the world. In the latest online survey, conducted between August 13 and September 5, 2014, consumer confidence increased in 39/60 markets, compared with 31 markets in the second quarter. Australia showed the most significant improvement, with confidence returning to year-ago performance. Almost half of Australians said they believe the next 12 months will be a good time to purchase the things they want and need. According to Nielsen's Quarter 2, 2015 Consumer Confidence report, global consumer confidence declined one index point in the second quarter to a score of 96. This near-baseline score reflects an overall stable outlook, but uneven performance at the country level increased within regions - especially in Latin America and the Middle East. Among the world's largest economies, confidence remained at near and above baseline levels in Germany (97) and the USA (101), despite quarterly index declines of three and six points, respectively. In China (107) and the UK (99), consumer confidence increased one and two points, respectively and increased one point in Japan (83) from the first quarter. Click here to download the report.

Nielsen has released the findings of a study that shows there is strong correlation between Twitter TV engagement and engagement with programming among the general viewing audience. To conduct the study, Nielsen Social analysed minute-by-minute tweet activity that have historically had different levels of Twitter activity and TV ratings. At the same time, Nielsen measured emotion, memory and attention among 300 viewers to track their engagement with episodes. The study also found that ads perform better on memorability in TV programs with high program engagement. The study's findings suggest that advertising in highly social programs could be an opportunity to drive both ad memorability and sales outcomes. Click here for more information.

For the first time, a majority of U.S. mobile subscribers of all age groups own smartphones. In fact, 51% of mobile owners over the age of 55 now own smartphones, driving the growth in smartphone penetration to seven out of 10 Americans overall. Smartphone penetration continues to grow every day, with 85% of recent acquirers picking smartphones when purchasing new handsets. The majority of smartphones in the U.S. run Android OS (52%), and more than half of these were made by Samsung (29%). However, Apple remains the largest smartphone manufacturer, whose handsets are used by 42% of smartphone users in the U.S. Meanwhile, Nokia's market share doubled over the last year, overtaking Blackberry as more recent smartphone acquirers have chosen Windows Phone handsets, which now make up 3% of smartphones in the U.S.
