Asian conference travellers spend 6.5 times more than other tourists in Sydney | The Insight Files | Scoop.it

Asian tourists visiting Sydney for conferences spend as much as 6.5 times more than other tourists, with luxury goods and milk power, including baby formula, among the top products they seek. Research undertaken by the University of Technology Sydney Business School has highlighted the capacity of Asian tourists who arrive as part of incentive schemes, which are used by companies to reward and motivate employees and attract and retain customers. Watches, jewellery, Ugg boots, vitamins and lanolin were also among the most sought-after products for more than 1300 Asian travellers surveyed in the study commissioned by Business Events Sydney. Despite a strong swell in Australian travellers heading overseas during the 12 months ending September 2014, Tourism Research Australia says the falling value of the Australian dollar against other currencies should prove the catalyst for turnaround in domestic holidays. Recent figures reveal that domestic overnight spend and trips rose 4% and 5% respectively to $53.7 billion and 79.7 million. While growth is largely due to Australia's VFR traffic, increases are tipped for domestic holiday visitation. The number of Chinese visitors to Australia is booming, but there are a few things we can do to lure even more travellers to our shores. Chinese tourist spending now accounts for more than 20 per cent of total international tourist spending. Young Chinese people attending Australian education institutions also account for about one-third of all spending by international students. However, the number of Chinese visiting Australia is a drop in the bucket compared to the total number of Chinese tourists globally. 100 million Chinese travelled abroad last year and that number is set to increase to 234 million within the decade. This article recommends further streamlining the visa reform process in order to make it easier for Chinese tourists to travel here. Additionally, it recommends tapping into the celebrity effect in China - the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand tripled after the release of a blockbuster movie called Lost in Thailand.
