Upcoming Australian destinations for 2017 | The Insight Files | Scoop.it

Skyscanner Australia has looked over three years worth of data and crunched the figures from millions of flight searches to uncover  the hottest places in Australia for travellers in 2017. Skyscanner observed and predicted significant increases in travel to the following destinations:

 

  • Norfolk Island - there has been a 12% rise in flight bookings to Norfolk Island, on average, over the past three years.
  • Esperance, Western Australia - booked flights to Esperance have increased by 11% on average over the past three years.
  • Proserpine, Queensland - booked flights to Proserpine have increased by 10% on average over the past three years.
  • Hobart, Tasmania - Skyscanner Australia shows that flight bookings have increased by 6% on average over the past three years.
  • Canberra - flight bookings have jumped by an average of 4% over the last three years.

The NSW regional city of Wagga Wagga features alongside ever-popular tourist destinations like Uluru and Hayman Island in a list of this year's top trending Australian destinations for Australian travellers, collated by Flight Centre. Fremantle tops the list, with Flight Centre putting the increasing popularity of the Western Australian port city largely down to the rise of the cruise industry in the west. The relaunched luxury Hayman Island resort in the Whitsundays recently reopened as a five-star brand under new management from One&Only, helping put it at number two according to the travel company. This Traveller article highlights its predictions for the top 16 trending destinations of 2016. Among the forecasts include Australia's own Gold Coast and Darwin for the following reasons:


  • Gold Coast - the host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games has some new public transport infrastructure, plus the requisite beautiful beaches and, in villages like Burleigh Heads, a large dose of relaxed, beachy charm.
  • Darwin - Darwin does things differently. While everyone else is getting into wineries and European cafes and daring modern art galleries and cheese, Darwin is having a laugh. The most popular evening activity is heading down to the beach with a beer to watch the sunset. There's culture here but it comes with a slab of irreverence.

Australian travel experts have compiled a list of the hottest travel destinations for 2016. In second position is Australia's Great Barrier Reef, which is tipped to rise in popularity following the launch of Sir David Attenborough's documentary series on the Great Barrier Reef. The documentary is due to air in over 130 countries early next year. Other rising Australia destinations include: Northern Territory's Uluru in twelfth position, followed by Queensland's Palm Cove at number sixteen and Northern Territory's Katherine in nineteenth place. When analysed against wider trends, the patterns of growth highlight some interesting options. Among the trending domestic destinations for 2017 include Hayman Island, Hahndorf, Fraser Island, Mount Hotham and Cooma. Tulum, Mexico has been named as the world's top destination on the rise, famous for its phenomenal Mayan architectural sites. The New York Times has released its annual innovative list of the 52 top places to go in 2016, with Australian city Sydney making the list. This year Sydney has earned its place for being a city 'outdoor lovers can embrace', home to beaches and national parks. Additionally, Sydney's two new developments have caught the eye of The New York Times this year. The shoreside promenade of Barangaroo Reserve, and will also temporarily house Copenhagen restaurant Noma for ten weeks from this month. The Goods Line - a repurposed train line that's been turned into an elevated walkway in a similar vein to New York's High Line, Sydney's renovated Old Clare Hotel and the reintroduction of American Airlines flights to Los Angeles in December also rated a mention.
