According to Luxury experts Virtuoso, Australians are heading to Cuba and Iceland, looking for adventure in Antarctica and South Africa and honeymooning in the Maldives. Revealed in the 2017 Virtuoso Luxe Report Australia, these are the luxury trends being seen by the network's Australian based advisors for the coming year. The annual report, which for the first time included a breakdown from the Australian market, is the leading trend predictor for luxury and experiential travel globally. Also, for the first time, the report looks at destinations which are rapidly changing or at the risk of disappearing in the coming decade. Find out more.

Australia has once again been ranked as the number one destination in Virtuoso's Travel Dreams survey, with Sydney, Tasmania and Kangaroo Island coming out on top. The most popular trip styles were beach (46 per cent), adventure (37 per cent) and cultural/historical (29 per cent). The 2016 survey asked respondents about their fantasy trip choices as well as their dream destinations and preferred travel styles. Over 1,200 travellers from 26 countries submitted entries with a panel of Virtuoso judges selecting the winners based on criteria including content, style and creativity.

Tourism Australia targets wealthy travellers | The Insight Files | Scoop.it

US-based travel agents with wealthy clients are about to get an education in why Australia is the ideal high-end travel destination. The education is part of a new partnership signed between Tourism Australia and luxury travel network, Virtuoso. As part of the agreement, Tourism Australia will market and educate Virtuoso members on how to sell Australian holidays to high net worth clients. It will be supported by the new online training initiative, the Aussie Specialist Program as well as additional marketing dollars and increased resources in the US. The partnership comes after Virtuoso's network experience a 137% year-on-year increase in high-end US travellers booking getaways to Australia. Find out more.

Virtuoso, the international network of luxury travel agencies, has unveiled its 2016 Virtuoso Luxe Report, with results from the annual survey of its elite advisors. Virtuoso's travel advisors have weighed in on their five must-have experiences of 2016:


  1. Exploring new destinations is this year's chief travel motivator, with Cuba as the top emerging destination.
  2. Creating unforgettable memories that outlive the experiences themselves will be more crucial than ever.
  3. Crossing something off the bucket list without waiting for the trip of a lifetime to happen in the future.
  4. Pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone, with adventure a key trend in 2016.
  5. Enjoying closer to home experiences, with New York being rated as the United States' top destination.


The report has tipped the following countries as the top global destinations of 2016: Italy, France, South Africa, Mexico and Australia. Find out more.
