Whitsundays take on silver screen

Queensland will enlist the power of film and social media in an innovative bid to promote the Whitsundays.

Screenwriter Craig Pearce, who worked on The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge among other films, will pull together a movie storyboard that will be entirely crowd-sourced through social media with the end result to be entitled The Whitsundays.

Over a four week period, an image will be uploaded onto the Whitsundays Facebook and Instagram pages each day, prompting budding screenwriters to write the next scene.

Pearce will pick the daily winners and will also provide daily screenwriting tips to entrants.

Upon the launch of the concept, state minister for tourism Jann Stuckey expressed confidence the script would showcase the islands.

“Mr Pearce is at the top of his craft and his world-class skills will soon be put to use with Australians to oversee a movie-style story that captures the epic experiences and stunning locations of the Whitsundays,” she said.

Australians whose ideas are used for the movie will receive recognition in its credits, $500 daily prizes and a $10,000 Whitsundays holiday grand prize up for grabs.
