According to new research conducted by Booking.com, one in four Australians are planning to jet off on their own for the first time in 2017. Australians are also obsessed with travel and apparently 63 per cent of us remember our first time travelling more fondly and clearly than our first date. The research from Booking.com found that Australians find the USA, UK, Thailand and Argentina the most alluring destinations, while taking in the local culture and trying local foods were rated the favourite parts of travelling to a new place. Australia was also listed as the number one international destination for solo travel, with Sydney landing in the top ten places for first-time travel. Find out more.

Travelling solo is increasingly on the cards for travellers, with 32% of surveyed Australians planning to jetset alone in 2015. Lastminute.com.au surveyed over 4100 people, and the results showed a surge in interest for destinations that are doable on your own. With 61% of respondents already experienced in solo travel, and another 25% keen to try it in the future, it’s a major trend to keep an eye on. Counting down the top reasons for taking a trip on your own, the freedom to do what you want when you want came in as number one, with 53% of respondents voting it in. At 17%, the ability to be completely spontaneous was the next top reason, and meeting new people came in third. At 5% and 4% respectively, getting to know yourself and immersing yourself in culture were the other reasons for solo travel.

Solo travel intentions are on the rise in the U.S. and particularly with millennials. In an MMGY Global Survey of 2,300 U.S. adults in July, 37% of millennial respondents they indicated they intend to take at least one overnight leisure trip alone during the next six months. That's up 5% from a year ago and 8% from two years ago, a much sharper rise than older generations. Some 25% of all respondents said they'll take at least one trip by themselves before the end of the year, up only slightly from last year and their willingness to travel unconventionally marries this uptick. "With thoughts starting to turn toward summer holidays and vacations, findings released as part of the first Solo Travel Report commissioned by Booking.com, has revealed half of female solo travel enthusiasts (50%) are now more likely to holiday alone than they were five years ago. Whilst it might be the assumption that solo travel could be about an escape from everyday mundane life, the report showed that these women are more inclined to want to get away from it all to experience new cultures, with two thirds (65%) saying they actually feel more confident when taking a trip by themselves."
